Fiber Arts Exhibit – Cannon Art Gallery

Art in Carlsbad

The “Contemporary Perspectives in Fiber Arts” exhibit opened January 7, 2023 and runs through March 18. We visited the show at the city-owned Cannon Art Gallery today and thoroughly enjoyed it. As a result it’s well worth a visit if you live nearby or are in the area.

“Contemporary Perspectives in Fiber Arts” features a number of selections from California Fibers, an organization founded in 1970. Furthermore, California Fibers “supports artistic growth and professional advancement for contemporary Southern California fiber artists” (per their website).

The craftsmanship and creativity in this exhibit was really impressive. Many California Fibers artists have won awards and are represented in a number of museums and private collections. Thus that made the exhibit particularly meaningful and enjoyable.

Fiber artists create using a wide array of materials (natural and synthetic) and in multiple ways. Additionally, these artists express themselves in basketry, multi-media, sculpture, weaving, felting, embroidery, crochet, quilting, knitting, and more.

Carlsbad has a great reputation as an arts community, and the Cannon Art Gallery is a special part of that arts tradition. Thus this is an exhibit worth seeing if you have any interest in art!

Here’s an exhibit, Frida Kahlo’s Garden, from 2021 at the Cannon Gallery that I particularly enjoyed.
