Opening Day at the Del Mar Races July 17th

Horses racing at Del Mar Horse Races

No, it’s not a Carlsbad event or happening, but the Del Mar Horse Races at the famed Del Mar Fairgrounds are a pretty big deal during the summer here in San Diego, and worth sharing in case you are interested.

Opening Day is almost here – it’s Wednesday July 17th, and if you are interested in thoroughbred horse racing Opening Day IS probably the best time to go. Yes, it gets crowded, but it’s lots of fun, and the annual Hats Contest (with over $5000 in cash prizes in 5 categories) is always a great time, as is the people watching in general. Don’t forget YOUR hat, even if you don’t participate in the contest.

Oh, and the horse races can be kind of exciting, too, whether you gamble or not!

The Del Mar Races run through Labor Day, Monday September 2nd – no racing on Mondays and Tuesdays except for the final day.

You can expect the parking to get crowded so consider taking the Coaster to the Solana Beach train station, then hopping on one of the shuttles. And of course you can always Uber it – there’s a special spot at the track for drop offs and pick ups.

Plan to make a day of it to enjoy all the races have to offer! There are plenty of options for dining, too – concession stands as well as restaurants. Those eateries that are trackside require advance reservations.
