Leo Carrillo Film Festival 2023

Summer Fun in Carlsbad CA

If you like historic movies, the Leo Carrillo Film Festival in Carlsbad is coming soon!

Carlsbad’s weather and pleasant summer evenings are a great opportunity to spend time outdoors. And the annual film festival at the former ranch of Hollywood actor Leo Carrillo may be just right.

The 17th Annual Leo Carrillo Film Festival will be held at Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park in Carlsbad. The festival takes place on 3 consecutive Friday nights, August 18, August 25 and September 1.

Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park

The land, hacienda, and out-buildings owned by popular Hollywood film and TV star Leo Carrillo have been beautifully preserved at this historic park. Leo Carrillo is probably best known as Pancho in the 1950s TV series “The Cisco Kid”.

A visit to this historic park in the heart of the Rancho Carrillo master planned community is well worth it. Plus the peacocks are fun to see. And it’s free!

HERE’S WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE FILM FESTIVAL

The Leo Carrillo Film Festival features 2 historic films featuring Hollywood actor, Leo Carrillo, plus a 3rd offering.

August 18 – “In Caliente” (1935)

August 25 – “Before Morning” (1933)

September 1 – “The Man from Snowy River” (1982) is a movie Leo Carrillo would supposedly like because of the roles Kirk Douglas played in the film.

The Park opens at 5:30 PM and movies begin after sunset. Tours of the Hacienda are available until approximately 7:30. I’ve taken the tour in the past and recommend it. It’s fun to experience the history of this special place in Carlsbad that has been so well preserved.

Beverages and gourmet snacks will be available for purchase. Bring a low-back chair, a flashlight, a blanket, and warm clothes. Evenings along the coast can get chilly even in the summer!

Before the start of the feature you can enjoy an episode of “The Cisco Kid,” time permitting. Be aware that the movies are subject to change without notice.

While the movies are free, you must register online for tickets (limit 2 per person). Tickets are available now.

The Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park is located at 6200 Flying LC Lane off Melrose Drive, about 1 mile south of Palomar Airport Road.
