There are lots of reasons, but some key ones are to have someone who is YOUR coach and guide, someone to help you through the home search process, and a person who will look out for YOUR best interests in the negotiation portion of the process which can get very emotional.
I have always believed strongly in buyer representation, even when buying a home myself before becoming a real estate professional, because of the advantages of having someone look out for YOUR BEST INTERESTS (which the listing agent does NOT do for you since they are looking out for the seller).
