The Flower Fields Open March 1

Flower Fields in Carlsbad 2016

The Flower Fields in Carlsbad CA will open on Wednesday March 1, 2023, an annual tradition.

All visitors must book tickets online for a specific date and arrival time. As a result there are no tickets at the gate.

The Flower Fields will not look like the feature photo on Opening Day since flowers take time to reach their peak. That can happen in late March or early April depending on the weather. However, they are beautiful even when not at peak, and a colorful sign of spring!

Here’s a photo from today.

Flower Fields on February 24, 2023

The plants are mature with lots of buds, and we are just starting to see some color.

The Carlsbad Flower Fields have been popular for decades. There are about 55 acres of brightly colored Ranunculus, probably millions of flowers.  I enjoy the transitions during the year as the fields change from brown dirt to green plants, then to vibrant colors, and back to brown dirt.

Here’s a short video from March 2022.

The Carlsbad Flower Fields are open every year from March 1st until Mother’s Day, which is May 14th this year.

FLOWER FIELDS ATTRACTIONS

Here are some of the attractions you’ll enjoy:

Historic Poinsettia display and orchid greenhouse

American Flag of Flowers on the south side of the fields. This can be seen from Palomar Airport Road at Armada Drive by Costco

Santa’s Playground

Sweet pea maze

Artist gardens and Bird Aviaries

Multiple gardens – Sunflowers, Illusion, Butterfly

Food is available – Strawberry Shack (serving all sorts of sweet treats), pizza, and more

Additionally, there are plenty of activities to enjoy at the Flower Fields, too.

It’s a treat to walk through the fields to experience the flowers close up. Furthermore, there are wonderful photo opportunities.

Take a ride on their antique tractor wagon for a different experience ($8 for adults, $4 for children aged 3 to 10). Purchase tractor tickets once inside on your mobile device or with a credit card (no cash).

The U-Pick Blueberry Patch was added in 2021. Additionally, as part of your visit to the Flower Fields, you can enjoy picking blueberries. A 1-pint basket costs $8. In addition, check for signage to see if picking is available.

The Carlsbad Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch are easily visible from the I-5 Freeway looking eastward at the Palomar Road Exit (look for the windmill).

One of the best vantage points (my opinion) is looking down on the fields from Armada Drive. You can enjoy the Carlsbad windmill and 180 degree views of the ocean in the distance. Moreover, it’s free.

Of course it’s not the same as walking through the fields on foot, but you can stop by whenever you want and the views are magnificent!

The Carlsbad Flower Fields are located at 5704 Paseo Del Norte at Palomar Airport Road.
