Things to do in Carlsbad

The 2022 Carlsbad Marathon and Half Marathon are coming soon!

The Carlsbad Marathon is a very popular running event, and a qualifying marathon for the famed Boston Marathon. And you can expect plenty of runners from other areas of the US at this world-class event! (photo is from a past running event along the Coast Road).

Carlsbad Marathon

The Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Marathon takes place on Sunday January 16th. Don’t forget that’s also the Martin Luther King holiday weekend. The official holiday is Monday the 17th!

The Carlsbad Marathon includes a Double Down Challenge as an option. This is 2 races, the 5K and then the half marathon, a total of 16.2 miles. Runners can also choose the Surf Sun Run 5K instead, too.

The Carlsbad Marathon and Half Marathon are popular with world class and amateur runners, plus appreciative viewers along the courses. This particular marathon is a favorite due to the location and views. Who does not appreciate Southern California weather in January?!

The course is gently rolling with minimal elevation changes and that’s pretty nice too. A large portion of the course is along the Carlsbad coastline on Route 101.

The marathon and half marathon both start and finish at The Shoppes at Carlsbad mall but follow different courses. Here are the course maps for the different races.

There is also a Kids Marathon Mile for kids of all ages and abilities. This event takes place at world-famous Legoland Carlsbad on Saturday January 15th.

Residents and visitors should be aware there are some significant road closures before and during the marathon. Hours are approximately 5 am until 2 pm on Sunday. Signs are now out around town as a reminder. Road closures include the Coast Road/Carlsbad Boulevard along the ocean from the Oceanside border to La Costa Avenue.

The Health and Lifestyle Expo is Friday January 14th from 12 noon until 5 pm. The Expo is at the Holiday Inn at 2725 Palomar Airport Road in Carlsbad. You can also visit the Expo on Saturday, from 10 am until 4 pm.

Join in the Finish Line fun at the festival. You’ll find refreshments, live music, and a beer garden for those 21 and older – bring your ID.

If you haven’t registered yet you can register online here. But don’t wait since online registration usually closes before the event.

If you have questions, the FAQ section is worth a look for all you might want to know. It’s good for participants and spectators!
